If you just bought a vehicle and you live in Virginia, you need to have it inspected immediately after registering it at the DMV. In Virginia, there is no grace period when it comes to car inspection. Vehicles in Virginia are required to undergo a car safety inspection every 12 months. The car inspection sticker on the windshield of your car will expire on the last day of the month.

Your vehicle is also subject to an emissions inspection. The emissions inspection date for your car is based on the date when it was registered, and the Virginia DMV notifies drivers between six and eight weeks before an emission inspection is due. An emissions inspection is required every two years at a certified emissions inspection station. Most emissions inspections require 20 minutes or less, and the driver will receive a vehicle inspection report after the tests have been performed.

The inspection procedure includes the inspection of each part of the vehicle, including brakes, parking brake, headlights, interior lights, steering and suspension, tires and wheels/rims, mirrors, horn, windshield and automotive glass, windshield wipers and defroster, exhaust system, license plate, air pollution control, driver’s seat, seat belts, airbags, doors, fuel system, and floor, as well as a general inspection under the hood. If your vehicle passes the car inspection, your car will receive a newly issued inspection sticker to remind you the next time your car needs to be inspected.
